Product description

Thumb Spica is a purpose-built orthopaedic immobilisation splint that extends from the distal forearm across the wrist and along the thumb ray, encasing the carpometacarpal (CMC) and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints in a controlled position that prevents the forces responsible for pain and secondary injury in a wide range of thumb and wrist pathologies.

The term ‘spica’ refers to the figure-of-eight or spiral wrapping pattern historically used to immobilise digit injuries, and the Alixor Thumb Spica replicates this mechanical principle in a modern, fabricated orthopaedic device.

A rigid or semi-rigid thermoplastic or aluminium stay runs along the palmar and radial aspect of the thumb, maintaining the joint in the anatomically optimal position of gentle opposition and slight abduction—the so-called ‘position of function’ that maximises tendon recovery and joint healing.

Clinical indications are extensive: Bennett’s fracture and Rolando fracture (first metacarpal fractures), UCL rupture (gamekeeper’s or skier’s thumb), CMC joint osteoarthritis, de Quervain’s tenosynovitis, trigger thumb, post thumb CMC arthroplasty rehabilitation, and scaphoid fractures.

The splint is also indicated for rheumatoid arthritis patients with CMC joint involvement, providing pain relief and deformity prevention during inflammatory flares.

The padded lining of the Alixor Thumb Spica is made from hypoallergenic foam-lined fabric that protects skin integrity during extended immobilisation.

Adjustable straps allow the treating clinician or the patient themselves to modify compression as swelling subsides over the course of recovery.

The interphalangeal (IP) joint of the thumb is typically left free in the standard design to preserve functional pinch for daily tasks.

Available in left and right variants and in paediatric and adult sizes, the Alixor Thumb Spica is a trusted product in hand surgery units, physiotherapy departments, and sports medicine clinics across export markets.

Key Features: Rigid/semi-rigid thumb ray immobilisation; covers CMC and MCP joints; IP joint left free for pinch function; hypoallergenic padded lining; adjustable Velcro straps; left and right variants; paediatric and adult sizes; indicated for fractures, UCL injuries, thumb OA, de Quervain’s, and post-surgical rehabilitation.
